Canopy pricing, explained (2026)

Canopy costs $74, $109, or $149 per user per month on its Standard, Plus, and Premium tiers, billed annually, with tax and close-automation modules charged on top by usage. That tiered per-seat structure is new. Most "Canopy pricing" pages still describe the old flat-base-fee plus à-la-carte module system. Canopy retired it. Those pages are quoting a product that no longer exists.
Here is the current grid, verified on Canopy's pricing page in August 2026. Then the add-ons that stack on top, and what a real firm ends up paying.
I am the founder of a tool that competes with one slice of what Canopy does (client onboarding and document collection), so I have an interest here. This page sticks to Canopy's own published numbers and links every claim. Where Canopy does not publish a price, I say so instead of filling in a guess. The disclosure is at the bottom.
How Canopy's pricing works now
Canopy sells tiered per-seat plans plus consumption-based add-on modules. Every base tier already bundles CRM and client management, document management, e-signatures, the client portal, messaging, automated workflows, invoicing, and payments. What you pay extra for is the tax-specific and volume-specific work: tax workflow, close automation, tax resolution, and identity verification credits.
The old Canopy story was "small base fee, then buy each module." That story is gone. Document management, workflow, and billing used to be separate line items. They sit inside the seat price now. Two things set your bill: the tier you pick, and the modules you use.
Almost everything is public. All three base-tier prices and every add-on module price sit on the pricing page. Only the Enterprise tier is gated behind "talk to sales." Canopy's page says a free trial exists. It does not say how long it runs or on what terms, so treat that as unconfirmed until you ask.
The one-line finding: if a page tells you Canopy charges a flat base fee and then a menu of per-module prices, it is out of date. As of August 2026 Canopy prices by seat (Standard $74, Plus $109, Premium $149 per user per month, billed annually) with document management, workflow, and the portal bundled in, and only tax and close automation billed as extras.
The tiers and the add-ons
Base tiers, per user per month, billed annually:
| Tier | Price (per user/month, billed annually) | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $74 | CRM, document management, e-sign, client portal, messaging, automated workflows, invoicing, payments |
| Plus | $109 | Everything in Standard, plus user roles, advanced task views, capacity planning, custom reporting |
| Premium | $149 | Everything in Plus, plus advanced workflows, billing scenarios, deep reporting |
| Enterprise | Custom (quote only) | Built for large firms; price not published |
The add-on modules are billed by usage, not by seat, and stack on top of any tier:
| Add-on module | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tax Workflow Automation | Starting at $34 per client credit | Volume discounts available |
| Close Automation | $10 per connected client/month | First 5 connections included |
| Tax Resolution | $50 per user/month | Volume discounts available |
| Knowledge Based Authentication (KBA) | $1.25 per KBA credit | Charged per verification |
| AI Notetaker | Included hours by tier | 8 hrs Standard, 12 hrs Plus, 16 hrs Premium |
The AI Notetaker allowance is bundled, not a separate charge: 8, 12, or 16 hours per user per month depending on tier. The other four modules are the ones that move a real bill. They scale with client and return volume, not with headcount.
What a real firm pays
Seat cost is easy to compute; the add-ons are where the total floats. These three examples use only Canopy's published numbers. The volume assumptions are stated, so swap in your own.
Solo bookkeeper on Standard. One seat at $74 per month is $888 per year. Close Automation includes the first 5 connected clients. A solo book with 5 or fewer QuickBooks connections adds nothing. Above that, each connection is $10 per month. Base case: roughly $888 per year, all in.
Three-person tax and bookkeeping firm on Plus. Three seats at $109 is $327 per month, or $3,924 per year in seat cost. Then add Tax Workflow Automation at $34 per client credit. A firm running 150 returns adds about 150 × $34 = $5,100 per year before volume discounts. That firm lands near $9,024 per year. The tax half tracks return count, not seats.
Eight-person firm on Premium. Eight seats at $149 is $1,192 per month, or $14,304 per year in seat cost alone, before a single module. At this size Canopy steers larger firms toward the quote-gated Enterprise tier. The real figure may land above or below the list-price math, depending on the deal you negotiate.
Read the add-on modules as variable cost, not fixed cost. Tax Workflow Automation at $34 per client credit and Close Automation at $10 per connected client per month grow with your book, so a firm that adds tax clients faster than staff sees its Canopy bill climb without adding a single seat. When you price Canopy, price the modules at your real client volume, not the seat count.
To compute your own Canopy total before you buy:
- Multiply your seat count by the tier rate: $74, $109, or $149 per user per month, then by 12 for the year.
- Add Tax Workflow Automation at $34 per client credit times your annual return count.
- Add Close Automation at $10 per month for each connected client past the first 5.
- Sum the three lines. A three-seat Plus firm running 150 returns, for example, lands near $9,024 a year.
Contract terms, payment fees, and the trial
Three details on the page are worth pulling out, and two are worth flagging as gaps.
Billing is annual. The tier prices read as "per user per month." Canopy bills them yearly. The page publishes no separate month-to-month rate, so the monthly-commitment price is unknown. If you need true monthly billing, ask sales before you assume the listed number applies.
Payment processing carries its own fees. If you take payments through Canopy, the rate is 3.30% plus $0.20 for standard and premium cards, and 1% for ACH (capped at $10), identical across Standard, Plus, and Premium. That card rate is higher than the 2.9% plus $0.30 a plain Stripe or Square account charges. On a high-ticket invoice, the spread is a line item, not a rounding error.
The seat minimum and trial length are not disclosed. Canopy's pricing page does not state a minimum seat count, and it does not state how long the free trial runs. Both are the fine print that decides things for a small firm. Take them to the sales call as questions, and do not assume the friendliest reading.
What reviewers say about the cost
Canopy holds 4.5 out of 5 across 286 Capterra reviews (Ease of Use 4.5, Customer Service 4.5). The praise is consistent on one thing: consolidation. "The value you get for having most of the tech deck all in one spot cannot be beat," wrote one partner. "Clients love it, the UI is great and it's super user friendly," wrote another.
The cost complaints are specific and worth weighing. One firm owner called the pricing approach "archaic and outdated." Support drew its own criticism. One COO reported that a request for a callback went unanswered. A district manager wrote that "the company consistantly made promises that they were unable to uphold." Those are the trade-offs behind the 4.5. They match the add-on structure above: guess your module usage low and the bill creeps. The support gaps show up on the day something breaks.
Canopy vs the alternatives on price
The fair comparison set splits into two groups: full practice-management suites, and lighter onboarding tools. Here is where the published prices land, normalized to a per-user-per-year figure where the tool charges by seat.
| Tool | Published price (2026) | Charged by |
|---|---|---|
| Canopy | $888 to $1,788 per user/year (Standard to Premium, billed annually), plus usage modules | Seat |
| TaxDome | $700 to $1,200 per seat/year, billed upfront | Seat |
| Karbon | $708 to $1,068 per user/year (Team to Business, billed annually) | Seat |
| Portico | $0 to $149/month flat, unlimited team members | Workload |
| Content Snare | From about $35/month | Workload |
Among the suites, Canopy sits at the top of the seat-price band. It runs above Karbon and overlaps the top of TaxDome. It is also the only one of the three that stacks usage-based tax modules on the seat fee. The full TaxDome breakdown is in our TaxDome pricing guide. If you are weighing a switch away from a suite, the TaxDome alternative guide walks through when a lighter tool is the right call.
Karbon needs one note for onboarding buyers. It collects client documents by email and reminder rather than through a traditional client-login portal. One reviewer flagged being "not able to save documents to a portal that clients need to submit for bookkeeping." If a genuine client portal is the requirement, Canopy includes one and so does TaxDome. Karbon effectively does not.
The workload-priced tools are a different purchase entirely. Portico runs client onboarding and document collection with unlimited team members on every plan. It is free for 3 active onboardings a month, then $39 to $149 per month flat. It prices by workload rather than by seat. It is not a practice-management suite. There are no tax workflows, no CRM pipelines, no invoicing or time-tracking, and no general-ledger integrations beyond Zapier, Make, or the API. If you need those, buy a suite. Content Snare is the other narrow option, focused on document collection from about $35 per month.
Which one to buy: choose Canopy or TaxDome when the suite is the point (CRM, tax workflows, billing, and the portal in one system). Choose Karbon when email-based workflow collaboration matters more than a client-login portal. Choose a workload-priced tool like Content Snare when document collection and onboarding is the whole job and per-seat annual contracts are overkill. For accountants and bookkeepers specifically, we cover the portal-first setup in the client portal for accountants and client portal for bookkeepers guides.
Who Canopy fits
Buy Canopy when your firm runs the full stack through one system: CRM and client management, document management, workflows, invoicing, payments, the client portal, and Canopy's tax modules for return prep and resolution. At $74 to $149 per user per month plus usage, that consolidation replaces four or five point tools. The 4.5 Capterra rating comes from firms that use the breadth.
Look harder when your headcount pushes you into the quote-gated Enterprise tier, or when your tax-client volume is high. The Tax Workflow Automation credit at $34 per client and Close Automation at $10 per connected client per month can outgrow the seat cost. Price the modules at your real volume before you commit.
Skip it when document collection and client onboarding is the actual job. That means paying $888 or more per user per year for a suite you use as an upload box. It is the pattern the review complaints keep circling. A workload-priced onboarding tool covers the same job for $0 to $39 per month, with no per-seat annual contract.
